Today is day four since rescue of the dun mare and her foal (dubbed “Clover” and “Princess” by my son Conor) and of the rescue of Sis. The baby filly has diarrhea. She had it once before , probably during mom’s foal heat, but this is a new bout. Filly does not have a fever, however, and I believe the diarrhea could be caused by a number of different factors, many of which are benign. Administered Biosponge and will watch her carefully. She also tries to nurse every minute or so, which made me think she is hungry, and that “Clover” isn’t producing enough milk for her, but could also mean that there is more milk, and Princess is excited. Most of the time Princess comes away frustrated. Mama’s teats never look full. We’re being careful to increase mama’s nutrient intake at a safe rate, and have started supplementing foal with Foal-Lac, which is costly. For the sake of the mare & foal, we are asking for your help, to support feeding Mama and for Foal-Lac and Biosponge, and for the cost of blankets that fit both, for April in Colorado is a cruel month. It has taken all of Mama’s winter coat, and left her with shivering bones in a bitter wind. Tonight it is snowing.

As for Sis, she worries me mainly because of her lethargy. She is a sweet-tempered gal, for real, but she doesn’t feel good at all. Part of this could be pain from her shoulder wound, but not all. Both mares are eating, drinking and pooping normally, and have been seen by the vet.
