Equine Herpes Virus EHV-1 outbreak

posted in Blog, FSHR Horses, Mission, News | Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Several cases of the EHV-1 virus have occurred in Colorado. So far they have been documented in Boulder, Larimer, Weld, and Mesa Counties. The disease has also spread through other western states. The outbreak is traced back to horses attending the National Cutting Horse Association’s Western National Championships in Ogden, UT held on April 29 to May 8, 2011. If you have a horse that attended this event, it is critical to contact your local veterinarian immediately.

No cases have yet been documented in Southwest Colorado. As a precaution, it is recommended that horse owners be careful about taking horses to large events where they could be exposed, and the Montezuma County Fairgrounds are closed to all horses through June 1.

The most current information about EHV-1 can be found HERE: http://www.colorado.gov/ag
