Adopted! Blizzard

Daniel shows Terry how to rub my face and my poll to relax me. Ahh..

I am a 16-year-old Arabian/Welsh Cob mare. I’ve been adopted by Terry, a compassionate man who will be a groundwork partner with me for the mutual therapy we can offer each other. The very first time Terry and I saw each other, we hit it off. I have never responded to a stranger the way I did to him. Something about him…I couldn’t stay far away as long as he was there. I’ll be spending the next couple of weeks at FSHR and then, I will go home with Terry. I am so excited!

I came to Fresh Start after my loving owner’s homestead was lost in a fire. I have always known love, and am great with children and people with special needs and disabilities. For the past three years, I have been a “Program Horse” for the informal empowerment program that FSHR offers to at-risk youth and people with developmental disabilities.

My humans at Fresh Start are proud of my accomplishments. So am I. During the course of my time at FSHR, I have helped at least dozen individuals with developmental disabilities, one special-ed youth, and one at-risk youth. I’ve also provided recreational riding for volunteers, children, my past sponsor, and potential adopters of other horses.

However, my time for these uses has passed, and I am ready to belong to a family all my own.

Volunteers help familiarize me with a wheelchair filled with bright colors and objects, meant to resemble a wheelchair-bound person. Next we put a live volunteer in the chair, and practice leading me up to it, then practice pushing it toward me.

Do you have more pictures of Blizzard? and could she be adopted?
I am interested in adopting two horses, one for my husband, who is older and needs an older, well-trained , mild mannered horse who is unlikely to push, nip or kick at him, but who still has some liveliness and heart. He would not be riding, just communicating, loving and doing some groundwork
I am looking for a mare of 15-17 years who is also gentle and mild mannered, but I can probably handle a little more spunk than Terry. I’d prefer part Arab if that worked out, but not
necessary.
I also would be doing just ground and communication work with a horse, at least for a few years.
I have just begun to translate Feldenkrais work (gentle and intelligent movement work which improves movement organization and relieves pain), which I did for 24 yrs with people, to horses, and seen improvement in all. If I were to come see some of your horses (I live in Hesperus area), I would love to also work on whomever you thought would benefit the most from some nice touching and subtle movement.

Thank you so much! Sounds like there are possibilities. I would love to meet you, have you come out, meet the horses, and we could talk.

Thank you Ingrid, for introducing Terry and Blizzard. I knew Bliz was waiting for something/someone. I am so so glad they found each other!
