Gelding program extended

Gelding grant period extended

posted in Blog, Events | Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Last year, the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance awarded Fresh Start Horse Rescue its first-ever grant:  Funding to help horse owners in the five counties of Southwest Colorado afford to have their colts and stallions (intact male horses) castrated (neutered).  The five counties of SW CO are: Montezuma, La Plata, Dolores, Archuleta and San Juan counties.

The grant period lasted from Sept. 1, 2010 to Aug. 31, 2011.  During this period, we are glad to report that we reimbursed for 37 castration surgeries.

The purpose of the grant was to encourage stallion owners to castrate in order to help reduce the incidence of unwanted horses in the area.

Because there are some funds left over, CUHA has consented to EXTEND our grant period so that we will be able to continue providing reimbursement until the funds run out.  So if you did have a horse gelded during that period and did NOT apply for the reimbursement, definitely send in your receipt.  If you had a horse gelded between Aug. 31, 2011 and now, you may also send in your receipt to receive a refund for the castration so long as funds last.

Send to:  Gelding Rebate Program, P.O. Box 124, Lewis, CO 81327.

The grant was set up to reimburse for surgery charges, so reimbursements will NOT be given for wolf teeth extraction, farm calls, vaccinations, etc. that may have taken place along with the surgery.

Because this program is so needed, FSHR has been invited to apply for another grant for next year.  So if everything goes right, gelding reimbursement is here to stay!
