Fresh Start Horse Rescue Adoption Policy

Fresh Start Horse Rescue, Inc., of Dolores, CO, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. FSHR was first incorporated as a Colorado nonprofit in September, 2006.  Its founders have been rescuing horses since 2005. Our mission is to provide a fresh start for all breeds of horses, whether abused, neglected, unwanted, or stuck in a situation with loving owners who can simply no longer care for them. We rescue and care for them, and are looking for loving homes where they will have a future. Unadoptable horses we provide with a permanent home ourselves.

We’re not here to compete with other rescues or anyone else. We aim for a spirit of cooperation and what we want most of all is to help horses and people who need help with their horses. To that end we have a website, publish a newsletter and received our 501(c)(3) in October, 2008.

Currently we have more than 20 horses in our care, some of which were rescued by the founders of Fresh Start before the incorporation.  Not all are adoptable.

How adoption fees are arrived at:
Adoption fees run from $200 to $1500, but can fall outside this range. Fees are based partially on estimated fair market value and partially on what expenses have already been put into a horse. The adoption fee seldom covers the cost of rescue and rehabilitation. The adoption fees are a minor source of funding for feed and other expenses associated with horse rescue. Therefore, we can't accept items in trade as adoption fees -- with one exception:  approved commercial feed or good/excellent quality hay.

Adoption Requirements
Potential adoptive owners must visit Fresh Start at least three times to establish that they are committed to the horse’s welfare. These visits must include "hands-on" interaction with the horse. Potential adoptive owners must demonstrate knowledge of horse care and/or willingness to learn. Fresh Start will check references and conduct a site visit before the adoption is approved. Adoptive owners get an adoption certificate and must sign and return a statement of commitment to provide proper food, shelter, vet care and respect for their horse. Adoptive owners must understand that adopting a horse is a commitment for the life of the horse. Adoptive owners should expect follow-up calls and visits by Fresh Start Horse Rescue people.

We will not adopt out a horse for a fee so low that the adopter can just take it to the sale barn hoping for a profit. We will not adopt out an animal to someone who does not show respect for the horses -- at any price.

20 horses is a lot to care for and clean up after, and we can always use volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to get to know the horses.

If you would like to volunteer or are interested in adoption, e-mail us or contact us directly.
