Royo -Our veterinarian scored him at a 1.5 on the Henneke body condition scale. (1 is the lowest; below 3 is considered poor; 4-7 is where you want them.)
Raven - Our vet scored her at a 2 on the Henneke scale; her wooly coat obscures her protruding bones. He did not expect her to survive.
These two horses are not yet adoptable. They are in recovery, proudly sponsored by New Frontier Media. They need extensive care. To follow their progress, click on their pictures. Ruffles: This mare's loving owner could no longer keep her, so she turned her over to Fresh Start.
August '09, shortly after arrival. I was very sad to end up at a rescue. I need a family to call my own.
I am in adoption process!

Ruffles today (that's me! 3/5/10). I am a fine riding horse who can also be ridden bareback with a halter. I get along better with people than I do with the other horses here, and when a human comes around with a halter, I try to be the first one to get to her.

Winnie & Sam*:
We purchased this somewhat small mare and her adorable foal
in July 2008 from a dealer who had planned to send the mother to slaughter,
leaving her bay colt an orphan. Follow their ongoing saga on the
Horsy Blog.

Day One (these pictures don't do justice to the prominence of my vertebrae, rib
cage and other bone structures). I had given up. My only reason to survive was
to protect Sam from the awful humans.

"After" -
Here I am 3/5/10. I am a sturdy, gentle little riding pony. My Sam got adopted
and grew up! Here he is last year, a yearling with his new "dad," trying on
Panda's saddle.
*Sam is adopted*Winnie is ADOPTABLE!
